SKETCHBOOK

... a collection of inspirational things

The beginning of a new chapter.

I have decided to begin a shiny new blog for the summer and final year so will no longer be using this one for recording ideas and thoughts.

Johannes Sailer:  Deleted Scene

Echoing the most recent film projectThe Archivist, which sees an afflicted lonely figure become consumed by his own obsessions, Deleted Scene represents an unrealised stage-set. The film’s central persona enters into a series of ontological confusions - a tenet reflected in this new installation.

This teasingly recognisable environment works to question the roles of prop and sculpture, set and scene, and in turn interrogates the tools which we use to separate fantasy from fiction and on-screen life from material being.

On looking for a venue, I stumbled across a past exhibit of Jahannes Sailer at the Sierra Metro.  The installation made me think of my own cloudscape for my exhibit.

have spent the last couple of days trying to get to grips with SketchUp and have discovered it to be the most frustrating programme!!  Here’s a screenshot of todays result.
I’m gonna have another attempt tonight but I at least have a basic form of the space and an impression of the flow through a couple of spaces.
I had originally wanted to create a walk through space with the installation placed inside - I have no idea how to do this!!  The only way I can think is to photoshop them in which means flattening the sketchup model.  Is it best to have a run through without the installations or to have flat images showing the installation (which are on my boards for a couple)?

Selected mock-up’s of what the spaces might look like.

Light shaft vault, interactive flooring water chamber, Stalactite fibre optics.

First time using Google SketchUp.  These were made about 4 weeks ago.

First submission down, just one more to go.  Completely forgot to take any photos of my light box and brochure, so more images coming soon.
I’m pleased with how it went although I would have liked to attempt a website aswell, there just wasn’t enough time. So relieved that’s one part down though.
Next challenge - learn 3d modelling in 1 week!!!

I feel like I’ve completely neglected my Tumblr account recently, feels like I have no time to update things.

I had my first visit to the vaults last night since beginning this project.  Unfortunately it wasn’t the ghost tour.  Went to see Ben Ottewell play at Cabaret Voltaire and as usual he didn’t disappoint, it was incredible.

While I was there though I was trying to imagine the space being used for my exhibit. I’m not sure what the other vaults are like in comparison, the ones in Cab Vol are quite decent in size (2 vaults knocked through).  There was a door up the back which leads to the backstage rooms but it looked like various vaults broke off from there.

The sound in the space is really good aswell, I wasn’t sure what the accoustics would be like in a small underground space.  Obviously there will be equipment in place to support this with it being a music venue but it was good to find out.

I really wish I could find out more about the space available, there seem to be limited information available and the ghost tour companies have been really unhelpful.  I didn’t want to have to make up the map for it but it’s looking more and more likely that that’s what i’m going to have to do.
